Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark revealed that she was "so upset" after being picked No. 1 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft because she was unable to take in the rest of the event.
Clark detailed the whirlwind that ensued after her name was called while appearing on former Iowa teammate Jada Gyamfi's Fresh Tawk podcast alongside former Hawkeyes teammates Kate Martin and Gabbie Marshall.
“I was so upset because after I got drafted I just got drug out immediately and I didn’t get to see any of the draft,” Clark said.
Clark, the eventual 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year, said she missed Martin being selected by the Las Vegas Aces in the second-round at No. 18 overall while fulfilling her obligations.
“I had my phone but I really couldn’t go on it. It made me so upset. I didn’t even get to see Kate get drafted … but it made me really upset,” Clark continued.
“Then we went and had fun but … I didn’t even take pictures with you guys, my family, [boyfriend] Connor [McCaffery] — no one.”
Clark, the NCAA's all-time leading scorer for both men's and women's basketball, averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists and 5.7 rebounds during her rookie season, setting WNBA records for assists in a single-season (337) and game (19), as well as rookie records for points (769), assists, 3-pointers (122) and triple-doubles (2), leading the Fever to a playoff berth before being eliminated by the Connecticut Sun in the first-round. The 22-year-old emerged as the face of women's basketball during her decorated collegiate career, which led to a spike in support of the sport, with her college and WNBA games setting viewership records.
